Orkney Summer Camp 2025

Saturday and Sunday Aug 2nd / 3rd

Our North of Scotland annual summer camp is held in Orkney this year. This is a great chance to meet up with friends from clubs of Orkney, Elgin and Inverness, and enjoy a weekend of fencing training, competition and social nights out.

The Group going down to Orkney is now just about complete. please see list below. Let me know if there any late changes.

 Itinerary:

Boat: Lerwick to Aberdeen, 5.30pm Friday 7thth July arriving approx. 11pm

  • no cabin on this leg.  Meet by 4.30pm at Terminal, so we can place bags into the minibus.
  • Try to keep anything you need on the boat separate and pack fencing kit etc. onto bus. All bags on bus will be available as soon as we get to the hostel.
  • Return late Sunday night and we have cabins. Arrive 7.30am Monday

 Accommodation:

Orcades Hostel, Muddisdale Road Orkney, Kirkwall KW15 1RS Friday and Sat night. This is a mix of smaller rooms and 6 bed dorms. We will stay here on the Friday and Saturday nights and the clubs have exclusive use of the hostel.

  • Room allocation sheets will be available for all so we know where everyone is.
  • Bedding provided but please bring your own towels
  • Breakfast supplied by the club

 Food

Saturday and Sunday nights.   A local Hall has been booked for the clubs to use on Saturday evening for takeaways organized there. Sunday night will be a whole group night out at a local Chinese restaurant.

 Fencing:

We will run a programme of training, games, and a fun competition, which is designed to allow everyone to fence each other, at first, but then for similar age/ experienced fencers to end up in the same groups. Please arrange packing so you have a small separate bag to take shower stuff and towels to the venue. The bus will ferry kit bags to the hall.

The competition is expected to run over to the Sunday, where more training, including trying out other weapons takes place. For the younger fencers who may want to finish earlier on the Sunday it is planned to use the minibus to have a run out.

Cost:

We work hard to keep costs down. The cost of £150 has been static for a few years and all we would like to do is to increase that to £170 so we can include the Sat and Sunday meals and lunches in the total cost.

 The Cost includes the following:

  • Boat from Lerwick to Kirkwall return
  • Youth Hostel, Friday and Saturday nights
  • Fees for use of Sports Hall and related facilities (@ £35 per fencer).
  • Sandwiches and fruit and snacks lunch time Sat and Sunday
  • Meals for Saturday and Sunday nights
  • Breakfast in hostel.

 Not covered:

  • Any money for spending on boat for food / drink.   As a club we ask everyone to agree not to use games machines (spending money can disappear quickly).
  • There will be a supply of cheese and ham sandwiches and fruit / snacks on Saturday and Sunday at the hall.  You may wish to pack some extras for during the day. There is usually a chance to get to a supermarket on the Saturday.
  • Drinks during the weekend including any extra drinks on Sat and Sunday.

Consent:   These have been emailed out to participants and must be returned before the end of July.
