Orkney Training Weekend

Successful weekend in Orkney on June 15th / 16th.

12 fencers plus coach and parents enjoyed a great weekend in Orkney for our annual training weekend. The group was largely made up of our youngest fencers, and most of them were making their first fencing trip away from Shetalnd. Fencers from Orkney, Inversness and Eglin enjoyed a programme of training and a fun competition.

Staying at the Orkney Youth Hostel with fencers from the other clubs makes for a sociable weekend and both the training and the competiton was a great way to meet other fencers and make new friends and gather new ideas.

The fun competition is designed to allow the beginners and youngest fencers to get a chance to fence against the more experienced fencers. As the weekend progresses, fencers then separate out to their own level of fencing.

Matthew Blance and Erik Moncrieef were the only senior fencers travelling with the club and fenced well all weekend to make the top group. Notable performances from James Masson and Murray Todd placed them amongst the adult fenceers for the last pert of the competition putting them in the last 16 overall.

The Viking Cup, the Inter County competition is decided on the results in the fun competition. With so many of the group made up of our junior beginners, this was always going to be a difficult year, and after several years of success for Shetland, this year the cup was won by Orkney. Next year, this annual trip is planned to be in Shetland and we look forward to rgaining the Cup then.

The Shetland Fencers taking part were Matthew Blance, Erik Moncrieff, David Smith, Sam Smith, James Masson, Murray Todd, Jonathan Goudie, Dexter March, James Inkster, Izzie Gibson, Olivia Scott and Sami Morrison.
