Leon Paul Junior Series 2017

Shetland Fencers medal in UK Age Group Event

A group of 5 Shetland Fencers travelled to Falkirk last weekend to take part in the UK wide Leon Paul Junior Series.

They competed over 2 days in 2 different weapons, foil and epee. They were to meet top ranked UK fencers, travelling up to this Scottish round from all over the UK.

2 of the club’s more experienced fencers, Max Orr and Kieran Whyte competed in the under 15 category. They were joined by 3 newer club fencers all taking part in their 1st Official competition. James Masson competed in the under 13 age group, with Charlie Anderson and Murray Todd going in the under 11’s.

With a chance to measure up to some of the best British fencers of their age group, all Shetland fencers performed very well. Max Orr impressed all weekend to reach both finals, the epee on the Saturday and the foil on the Sunday, each time defeating Scottish Squad fencers in the semis. Despite fencing confidently in tremendously tight finals, Max lost both the epee and foil finals, both by the narrowest margin 15/14. With the high standard of competition, however, this was a great result for Max, being the only fencer to model on both days. He was joined in the semi finals of the epee by Kieran Whyte who won a bronze medal.

Coach Phil Hibbert was delighted in the performance of the debutants, all finishing well up the final finishing positions.

The regular fencing season has just about finished but the club is looking forward to a training camp in Orkney in July.
